KPIs - Did I hit the target?

Common question when I discuss ER challenges with the front line managers is, if I was your direct report, how would I know if I hit the performance target?

If you are in a large organization you would rely on some sort of performance management process or even a fancy dashboard to gauge performance. But what is you are in a start up and you need all hands on deck to hit the bulls-eye, every time!

The power of 1:1 meeting.

  • Like (+) - Focus on what they did well this week and how you appreciate it.

  • Dislike (-) - Spotlight an area of improvement where the individual needs input to resolve. This is your coaching conversation, not your let’s document moment.

  • Change (Delta)- Find out what they need to make their role better, how to make it manageable or simply talk about their career aspirations.

If you are coming up dry, use your post-it notes through the week leading to your 1:1 meetings. Use your post it notes to jot down topics for your next 1:1 discussion. You will have a column for plusses + (like), minuses - (dislike) and Delta (changes). Nothing like a simple process to capture performance high and low as you attend daily huddles, weekly meetings, and/or staff meetings.
